Rocky Point Pinot Gris 2023

A textural delight, with powerful, delicious aromas and flavours of ripe apple, Nashi pear, touches of honeysuckle. This is a truly aromatic expression of Pinot Gris and a marvelous food wine.

Pinot Gris has always been a strong focus for Prophet’s Rock. We farm our aromatic whites to the same high standard in the vineyard as our top Pinot Noir and take time through all aspects of production to ensure that the wine we release is the best reflection of the site it can be.

This aromatic style of Pinot Gris retains great freshness and will pair well with a diverse range of foods. Drinking well in its youth and will cellar well for 5+ years from vintage.

Winemaker’s Notes

Since the first release in 2013, this wine has been an excellent introduction to the Prophet’s Rock house style of Pinot Gris.

The grapes are hand-picked from the two Prophet’s Rock estate vineyards in the Pisa and Bendigo sub-regions of Central Otago. The principal source is the Kopuwai Delta vineyard which is located in the Pisa sub-region of Central Otago. The site has a mix of glacial and alluvial soil, sitting high above the Clutha River. The Rocky Point Vineyard in Bendigo has warm, free draining, predominantly schist soils and some of the steepest planted blocks in Central Otago.

Extensive canopy and crop management is carried out during the growing season to ensure the grapes attained full physiological ripeness with great concentration, aromatics, and flavour. Yields on both sites are kept very low and do not exceed 38hl/ha or 5t/ha.

The handpicked fruit is whole-bunch pressed and fermented using only indigenous ‘wild’ yeast. The wine is then fermented in predominately stainless steel tanks and aged on yeast lees prior to bottling in the spring. The wine is bottled under screw-cap.
