Prophet’s Rock Dry Riesling 2020

Prophet’s Rock Dry Riesling 2020

Intense aromas of lemon, lime, and grapefruit with green, crunchy apple and hints of chamomile. The palate is lively and fresh, citrus, apple, and subtle nectarine flavours with zingy acidity and a chalky mineral note on the long, lingering finish.

This wine represents a very small portion of our overall production but has always been a strong focus for Prophet’s Rock. We farm our aromatic whites to the same high standard in the vineyard as our top Pinot Noir, and take time through all aspects of production to ensure that the wine we release is the best reflection of the site it can be. This is a dry style with bright aromatics and great concentration. The freshness and texture make it an easy food match.

619 cases were made.

Attractive crushed stones, grapefruit and lemon peel with some light, lees-derived, pastry-like notes, too. The palate has impressively fresh and lively flavors with bright peaches and lemons holding long and smooth. Layered yet piercing textural style here. Drink now.

Winemaker’s Notes

2020 was a fairly challenging growing season through the spring and December. Cold weather, rain, snow and high winds through flowering resulted in low yields across the vineyard including the Riesling (which has small bunches anyway).

The season came right and became more settled coming into Christmas onwards, so the vines easily caught up and ripened the small crop. The weather through harvest was fairly settled apart from a snowfall fairly early in April. The Riesling was picked in late April and looked stunning, small uniformly golden bunches with great concentration and flavour. The wine fermented well and after long ageing on lees was bottled during vintage 2021. Unsurprisingly the wine has great concentration and weight balancing the fresh acidity. Expect the ripe aromatics to become more mineral slowly over time. This wine will reward cellaring with a long drinking window that we really enjoy looking at 10 years from vintage.
