2018 Reviews from James Suckling.com

Also from 2015, Prophet’s Rock has debuted a new wine of some note. The Prophet’s Rock Pinot Noir Cuvée Aux Antipodes 2015 is a collaborative project with esteemed Burgundian winemaker François Millet and adds yet another layer of respected outsider influence to the Central Otago pinot noir landscape.

The fine, yet stoic and savory style of this debut 2015 vintage is certainly characteristic of Millet’s touch as seen in the wines he makes at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé in Chambolle-Musigny. The follow-up 2016 release is also reviewed here, and it really impressed with its graceful, seamless and fluid style.

Notes & rating:

Prophet’s Rock Pinot Noir Central Otago Cuvée Aux Antipodes 2016  – Score 96

New Zealand, Central Otago, Vintage 2016

This is a collaborative project wine between Paul Pujol and Burgundian winemaker, François Millet. There’s a very attractive, fresh array of wild flowers, light herbs and pristine red-cherry and plum aromas. The palate has a seamless build of ripe-cherry flavor and fine, long tannins. Superb. Drink or hold.

Prophet’s Rock Pinot Noir Central Otago Home Vineyard 2016  –  Score 96

New Zealand, Central Otago, Vintage 2016

This is very good. The rich and attractive, fresh red cherries and plums sing in the glass. It delivers a very vibrant impression with blood oranges and pomegranate in the mix, too. Smooth tannins carry long and seamless, drenched in ripe red-cherry and pithy pink-grapefruit flavors. Super long and rippling with energetic fruit, this is a beautiful young pinot. Drink or hold.

Prophet’s Rock Pinot Noir Central Otago Retrospect 2013 – Score 96

New Zealand, Central Otago, 2013

The pinnacle of pinot at this estate, this has an impressive, seamless and fresh feel with deep-set spices and ripe red-cherry aromas. Gently sappy notes, too. The palate has a deep core of fruit, yet is savory, long and succulently juicy. Powerful yet elegant poise. Drink or hold.
